Maroua and Mt. Maroua

We took a few trips to the city outside of Kari's village to kill time, shop for souvenirs, and make a trek up Mt. Maroua.

The artisan market was a very active little market, but very expensive.  It would have been even more expensive had Kari not been there with her (ahem) "knowledge of the economy."  The prices that the sellers originally quote are just astounding -- I believe one item's first price was 10,000 francs and we eventually got it for 1,500.

"Mt." Maroua is really just a hill -- still a strenuous little climb, but one that was only about an hour and half in duration.  After the disaster of Mt. Cameroon it was nice to see the top of a hill.

Finally, success at mountain climbing!

It was hard to keep up with the local kids -- you could tell
that they had climbed the hill a few times.

The view from the top.  You can see the dry riverbed that the town
is built on.  It fills up during the rainy season.
